Why did blood and water come from Jesus' side? John 19 records one
of the most overlooked mysteries of the crucifixion — and John
stops the story to say his testimony is true.
After Jesus died, a Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear,
and immediately blood and water came out. On one level, it proves
Jesus truly died. But John is showing us a sign.
Blood points to sacrifice.
Water points to cleansing.
The unbroken bones point to the true Passover Lamb.
In Eden, God formed Eve from Adam's side while he was in a deep
sleep. At the cross, the second Adam falls into the sleep of death
— and from His pierced side flows the sign of a new, redeemed
people. Sacrifice complete. Cleansing opened. New covenant released.
