What did Jesus do for the three days between the cross and the
resurrection? Most people know He died on Friday. They know the
tomb was empty on Sunday. But what happened in between?
This is one of the deepest mysteries in the Christian faith.
Scripture gives us powerful hints. In Luke 23, Jesus tells the
thief, "Today you will be with Me in Paradise." In 1 Peter 3,
Christ is said to have "preached to the spirits in prison."
Ephesians 4 says He "descended into the lower parts of the earth"
and led "captivity captive." Colossians 2 says He "disarmed
principalities and powers" — making a public spectacle of them.
Ancient Christian tradition calls this the Harrowing of Hell —
Christ descending to the realm of the dead, not as a victim,
but as a conqueror.
Death swallowed Him… but death could not digest Him.
