Dontaye Carter grew up in Orlando, Florida in a single-parent, working-class home. His mother raised 4 children while working and earning a college degree, so he learned from an early age what you could achieve through hard work and perseverance. He went on to study Broadcast Journalism at Florida A&M University, where an internship at the local news station led to a career in television news production and reporting.

After meeting the woman he would marry, Dontaye moved to Sandy Springs to be with her and to start a family. In 2014, he left television news to join the former Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard as the youngest person ever to lead up the DA’s Public Affairs Department. It was his work there that led him to start his own Public Relations firm which he has used to bring attention and awareness to important stories like those of Ahmaud Arbery, Jimmy Atchison, and the survivors of R. Kelly, in addition to SB 202 and the growing problem of voter suppression laws.

My mini and me twinning today!

I got a feeling they’re about to shut Ancestry down.

It’s one thing to hear your elders tell the stories of the blood that flows through your veins.

It’s another thing to see their names.

What started as a family tree project turned into something much deeper. This Juneteenth, I began making shirts honoring my ancestors who fought for freedom, starting with Elijah Washington. Then I added his mother, Clara Washington. And with every record, every census, every court document, the story got bigger.

It hits different when you learn you’re an 11th-generation son of the South.

My ancestors fought in the American Revolution. Then nearly a century passed before they could to seize an opportunity to fight for their own freedom.

Eli Washington helped force this country to live up to its promises in the Civil War. After emancipation, he sued the Confederacy and won. He later sued the family that enslaved him for his inheritance and won that too.

And that’s when the story took a turn.

The family that enslaved him was also related to him.

The deeper I dug, the more I realized this wasn’t just a family tree. It was a family confession.

Like so many Black families in America, our story reveals the uncomfortable truth that some of the men who wrote the Declaration of Independence for this country also built entire bloodlines with enslaved women who had no legal right to refuse their advances, or protect themselves.

America’s first President wasn’t just connected to my family.

He is family.

In the immortal words of Killmonger:

“Hi, Granddaddy.”

In the last six years, property taxes have increased 32.5 percent in Sandy Springs.

The cost of living is climbing fast — and it’s pushing too many families, seniors, and young professionals out.

But here’s the truth: We don’t have to choose between strong city services and affordability. We can have both.

👉 Right now, our city collects $4.73 for every $1,000 of your home’s taxable value.
With property values skyrocketing, we could lower that rate to $4.00 —
💸 Saving families hundreds each year
🛠️ Still funding police, fire, parks, and roads
🏘️ Helping keep rent increases in check

This is about protecting the people who’ve built this city — and making sure future generations can afford to stay here too.

Let’s lead with fiscal responsibility and compassion.
Let’s build a Sandy Springs where everyone belongs.
