🚛 What does a proper diagnostic look like? Very often, a customer arrives with one problem and leaves with a completely different one. That's exactly what happened today with a 2022 Volvo. The customer arrived with a Check Engine Light and a complaint about a loss of power while driving. At first glance, everything looked pretty standard. We started the diagnostics. We saw a DPF Efficiency error. At this stage, many people are already preparing to replace the DPF filter. But a good diagnostician looks for the cause, not the symptom. During the inspection, we immediately noticed something very strange. Black smoke was coming from the exhaust pipe. And it shouldn't be there. If the DPF filter is working properly, no soot should pass through it at all. Black smoke is a serious sign of a problem. We continue the diagnostics. In addition to the DPF Efficiency error, we discovered another error related to the sixth injector. After initiating regeneration, the amount of smoke increased even more. It became clear that the problem was much deeper than just a faulty DPF. Since the client was concerned about not being left on the road, the decision was made to remove the DPF and inspect its condition. And here's where the fun begins 👀 After removing it, we discovered numerous cracks. And after cutting it open, it became clear that the filter core had already melted in places. So, the DPF itself wasn't the cause of the problem. It was its victim. The cause lay elsewhere. The faulty sixth injector was leaking fuel into the aftertreatment system. This caused overheating. The temperature became so high that the DPF began to deteriorate and melt from the inside. Therefore, simply replacing the DPF wouldn't have solved the problem. After some time, the same fate would await the new filter. In this case, all six injectors will be replaced with new original ones. After that, a new DPF filter will be installed. Only then will the truck be able to continue operating normally. That's why professional diagnostics aren't about finding a replacement part. It's about finding the root cause of the problem.
