Detroit DD15, DD13, DD16, Turbo Speed Sensor, Check Engine, turbo, DERATE, boost pressure, Freightliner Cascadia, Detroit diagnostics—that's what today's video is about. If you've got a turbo error, don't rush to buy a new sensor.
Almost every day, we receive trucks whose owners have already purchased a new Turbo Speed Sensor, but the problem persists.
In this video, we'll show you why a turbo error doesn't always mean a faulty sensor, how the Detroit DD15 system differs from the Cummins X15 and Volvo D13 with a VGT turbo, what faults actually cause the Check Engine light, and why proper computer diagnostics can save thousands of dollars.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions from Drivers
• Why did the Check Engine light come on for the turbo?
• What should I do if the Turbo Speed Sensor error appears?
• Why did the Detroit DD15 go into DERATE?
• Why isn't the turbo developing pressure?
• Why is my Freightliner Cascadia losing power?
• How do I test the Turbo Speed Sensor?
• Can the intercooler cause a turbo error?
• What should I do if the turbo is spinning too high?
• Why does fuel consumption increase after a turbo error?
• Should I replace the Turbo Speed Sensor immediately?
🔧 Why does this happen?
On Detroit DD13, DD15, and DD16 engines, the turbocharger speed is constantly monitored by the control unit. But the sensor itself may not be the only cause of the error.
Air leaks, a damaged intercooler, a faulty charge pipe, problems with the DPF, aftertreatment, wiring, or even low engine compression can cause the same symptoms and errors.
✅ How to solve the problem
Don't start your repair by replacing the sensor.
First, run a professional computer diagnostic, which will show the actual turbo speed, boost pressure, and turbocharger operation and help identify the root cause of the problem. This is almost always cheaper than replacing expensive parts by trial and error.
