Sir Reginald Watson-Jones β The Most Influential British Orthopaedic Surgeon You've Never Heard Of
#medicalhistory
.
His colleagues called him "The Black Prince" β a reference to his penetrating dark eyes and commanding presence in the operating theater. The nickname suited him. A Packard limousine with a chauffeur. A butler. A personal secretary. An office staff of five. Orthopaedic surgeon to King George VI and later Queen Elizabeth II. The most influential British orthopaedic surgeon of the twentieth century.
.
Sir Reginald Watson-Jones was born in Brighton in 1902 and trained at Liverpool University, where he became one of the first surgeons in history to earn the MCh Orth degree in 1926. Under the mentorship of Sir Robert Jones, he rose rapidly through the British orthopaedic establishment.
.
In 1940, he published Fractures and Joint Injuries. The textbook went through fifteen reprints during his lifetime and was translated into Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Polish. It became standard reference material in field hospitals across three continents during World War II. Surgeons of his era called it simply "the bible." A reviewer compared opening it to "some watcher of the skies when a new planet swims into his ken."
.
During the war, he served as civilian consultant to the Royal Air Force, where his aggressive rehabilitation programs returned 95% of injured airmen to active duty. He was knighted in 1945.
In 1948, against a severe post-war paper shortage, he founded the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British Volume) β edited from his basement office for the next twenty-four years until his death.
.
His anatomical contributions endure. The Watson-Jones anterolateral hip approach remains in active use for fracture fixation, hemiarthroplasty, and select hip replacements. The Watson-Jones classification of tibial tuberosity fractures is still taught in every orthopaedic residency.
He refused to admit he had reached retirement age. His staff knew better than to mention it. Sir Reginald died in his sleep on August 9, 1972. His fingerprints remain on the entire discipline.
