Do the Apocrypha teach salvation by works? Passages like Tobit 14:11 (“almsgiving delivers from death”) and 1 Maccabees 2:52 (Abraham justified by works) are often used to attack the doctrine of justification by faith alone. But when we read them in their proper context, they actually confirm what Scripture consistently teaches. From a Confessional Lutheran perspective, the key is understanding the difference between Coram Deo (before God) and Coram Mundo (before the world). • Coram Deo: Before God, we are justified by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone (Romans 3:28). Works add nothing to Christ’s finished work. • Coram Mundo: Before the world, our works show love for neighbor, protect from harm, cover sins, and display the fruits of faith (James 2:22, 1 Peter 4:8). The Apocrypha’s wisdom lines up with this. Tobit and Maccabees don’t teach works-righteousness; they show how faith proves itself in action. This is the same teaching echoed in Proverbs, James, and Peter—not a rival to the Gospel, but a reflection of it. 👉 Christ alone saves. Faith alone justifies. Works flow from that faith as the evidence of a living trust in God. That’s the clarity of the Lutheran confession. 📖 Want to go deeper?
