EXORCISM on the St. Benedict Medal
It is not known exactly when the first St. Benedict medal was minted.
The oldest ones only bore the image of St. Benedict holding a cross aloft in his right hand and his Rule for monasteries in his left.
Over time, a cross with Latin text and initials was added to the reverse. The meaning of these letters was lost over the years, but in 1647, a manuscript dating from 1415 was found in Metten Abbey in Bavaria, offering an explanation. They are the initials of a Latin exorcism prayer against Satan.
In 1880, the Monte Cassino Jubilee Medal was minted to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of St. Benedict's birth. This is the medal we present here, describing its elements and meaning.
