Ask any chatbot which is bigger, 9.11 or 9.9 β it often gets it wrong. A 9-year-old doesn't. Here's why a model trained on the whole internet fails at kid-level math: it isn't doing math at all. It sees text chopped into tokens, so "9.11" just looks like the bigger string β the way version 9.11 comes after 9.9. No number line in its head, just pattern-matching characters.
