Dire Wolves Return After 13,000 Years In a groundbreaking achievement, scientists at Colossal Biosciences have successfully brought back dire wolves, a species that roamed the Earth over 13,000 years ago. These magnificent creatures were declared extinct at the end of the last ice age, but three dire wolf pups, Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi, have been born. To bring back the dire wolves, the team used a process similar to the one that led to the creation of Dolly the sheep in 1996. They reconstructed the wolf's genome from ancient DNA, identifying 20 key differences in 14 genes that distinguished dire wolves from their closest living relatives, gray wolves. Using CRISPR gene-editing technology, they edited gray wolf genes to match those characteristics and inserted them into egg cells of domesticated dogs. After maturing in the lab, the embryos were transferred into the wombs of surrogate dogs, resulting in the births of Romulus and Remus on October 1, 2024, and Khaleesi a few months later. The pups are currently residing in a fenced-in ecological preserve in the northern United States, where they're receiving top-notch care. While some scientists hail this achievement as a breakthrough, others question whether these genetically engineered wolves are truly dire wolves. Since dire wolf DNA is 99.5% identical to that of gray wolves, some argue that the 0.5% difference might not be enough to classify them as a distinct species.
