Yes, we absolutely had to go ahead and pick it up on day one to experience the magic for ourselves. I don't know if you can see the massive, stupid grin on my face while playing, but I am absolutely loving everything about this title so far. A Visual Masterpiece: The Storybook Aesthetic Right off the bat, we need to talk about the graphics. He looks so unbelievably good! The visual style looks like it was pulled straight out of the legendary Yoshi’s Island, but elevated to an entirely new level thanks to the power of the Nintendo Switch 2. The game utilizes a breathtaking, handcrafted, stop-motion aesthetic that makes every single frame feel like a work of art. The attention to detail in the environment is staggering. As you are walking and exploring the world, you can actually see the flower buds and foliage organically fill out and bloom in real-time. It is a subtle touch, but it makes the world seem incredibly alive and reactive to your presence. Even the user interface is incredibly immersive—look closely at the beautiful lettering down in the lower part of the screen. It truly makes you feel like you are physically inside a living, breathing storybook! Meet Your New Best Friend: Mr. Encyclopedia In this brand new adventure, Yoshi is joined by a fantastic new companion. If you look in the lower left-hand corner of the screen, you will notice that the physical book itself is moving! The pages flutter, the birds on the paper flap their wings, and the magic jumps right off the screen. This living book introduces himself as Mr. Encyclopedia, though he insists that we call him "Mr. E" for short. I absolutely love the thematic mechanics that Mr. E brings to the table. In a brilliant twist on traditional platforming progression, the levels in this game are not called worlds or stages—they are referred to as "chapters" within Mr. E's pages. It is an incredibly fun, clever, and cute mechanic that perfectly ties the storybook theme directly into the core gameplay loop. Classic Gameplay with a Fresh Twist For longtime fans of the franchise, you will be thrilled to know that Yoshi feels better than ever to control. You have definitively got all of the traditional, beloved Yoshi moves at your disposal right from the jump. From his signature flutter jump to his classic egg-throwing mechanics, everything feels tight and responsive. We even get to see some awesome new abilities, like a brand-new tail flick attack! There is also a hilarious new riding mechanic where certain characters can ride on you, adding a whole new layer of cooperative puzzle-solving to the chapters. The level design is bursting with creativity. Within minutes of playing, we are already making beautiful flower arches and encountering some incredibly quirky enemies (some of which, honestly, look a little bit like butts, which is hilariously on-brand for Yoshi's whimsical enemy designs). The way Yoshi's little feet move as he scurries across the pages is completely adorable. The Perfect Cozy Platformer I have to admit, this game is completely adorable from top to bottom. The animation is flawlessly smooth, blending the stop-motion style with modern frame rates seamlessly. Pair those incredible visuals with a sweeping, cheerful, and incredibly catchy soundtrack, and you have an experience that is pure joy.
