WHAT HAPPENED TO THE INHABITANTS OF STABIA? 🌋🏛️ Stabia, one of the "lost cities" of ancient history, suffered a fate similar to that of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD buried it, turning its luxurious villas into a tomb of ash. This event is a crucial testimony for the archaeology of the Roman Empire. The ancient Roman city of Stabiae was one of the forgotten victims of the devastating eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. When many speak of the destruction of Pompeii, few remember that the inhabitants of Stabiae were also caught in one of the worst catastrophes in Roman history. Stabiae was famous for its luxurious villas facing the sea. Wealthy families lived there, gazing at Mount Vesuvius without imagining that this volcano would change their lives forever. At first, the inhabitants of Stabiae tried to escape the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. For hours, ash and pumice rained down on the Roman city. The sky darkened, and the air became unbreathable. But the worst was yet to come. Pyroclastic flows descended from Vesuvius at extreme speeds. These were clouds of gas and ash at over 500°C, capable of destroying everything in seconds. Many residents of Stabiae died trying to flee. Among the victims was Pliny the Elder, who died near Stabiae while attempting to rescue people during the catastrophe. Today, the ruins of Stabiae continue to help us understand what really happened during the destruction of Pompeii and the Roman cities buried by Vesuvius.
