The Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment's Varanasi Sector Anti-Corruption Team has arrested a woman Deputy Commissioner of GST (State) after allegedly catching her red-handed while accepting a ₹50,000 bribe from a businessman in Varanasi. The accused, identified as Ambika, was posted as Deputy Commissioner, GST (State), Sector 6. According to vigilance officials, she had allegedly demanded the bribe to clear the complainant's pending company returns and GST assessment. The complainant, Ajay Kumar Maurya, a resident of Bajardiha in Varanasi and director of Black Smith Industries Pvt. Ltd., filed a written complaint with the Superintendent of Police, Vigilance Establishment. He alleged that the officer demanded ₹50,000 to resolve issues related to his company's February 2023 GST returns and assessment. Acting on the complaint, the Vigilance team laid a trap near Dada Restaurant in the Chetganj area. As part of the operation, the businessman met the officer with the marked currency notes. According to officials, the team immediately moved in after Ambika allegedly accepted the ₹50,000 bribe and recovered the entire amount from her possession. Following the arrest, the Vigilance Establishment registered a case against the accused under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
