Antoine Lavoisier said, "Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed." You know this phrase. But who knows that he died on the scaffold?
He discovered the role of oxygen in combustion. He identified hydrogen. He demonstrated that air is not a pure element but a mixture of gases. He modernized chemistry by giving it a common language: his substance names are still used today.
In 1794, the French Revolution tried him for collecting the tobacco tax. His crime: being rich and learned. He was guillotined one morning in May. The judge is said to have remarked, "The Republic has no need of scientists."
Lavoisier was 50 years old. Chemistry lost its father.
