In 1943, in occupied Bosnia, the Germans sentenced a 17‑year‑old partisan girl named Lepa Radić to be hanged. They led her to the gallows as a “criminal”, even though her only “crime” was helping the partisans and her own people. Before the execution, she was offered a deal: freedom in exchange for the names of the underground fighters. For many adults this would have been a terrible test, but Lepa, only 17 years old, did not hesitate.
She calmly looked her executioners in the eyes and said: “I am not a traitor to my people. Those you are looking for will come and wipe you from the face of the earth.” These words, spoken by a teenager facing death, became a symbol of how far faith in freedom and human dignity can go. Today, Lepa Radić is remembered as one of the youngest heroines of the anti‑fascist resistance, proving that true courage does not need age, rank or uniform.
