The zeal of the Lord, the great army, will accomplish this. 8 The Lord will send a word into the house of Jacob and into the house of Israel. 9 Let all these people, the inhabitants of Ephraim and Samaria, know this: they say with pride and arrogance, 10 The brick wall has fallen, but we will build a new one from stone; the sycamore has been cut down, but we will replace it with cedar. 11 Therefore the Lord will set up Rezin’s enemies against him and join his enemies together; 12 Before them are the Syrians, and behind them are the Philistines; they open their mouths to devour Israel. For all this, the Lord’s anger has not subsided, and his hand remains outstretched. 13 This is because the people do not turn to him that smiteth them, nor do they seek the Lord, the mighty army. 14 Therefore the Lord will cut off the head and the tail, the palm branch and the reed, from Israel in a single day. 15 The elders and the nobles are the head, and the prophets who teach lies are the tail. 16 For those who led this people have led them astray, and those who were led are destroyed. 17 Therefore the Lord will not delight in their youths, nor have pity on their fatherless or widows; for each one is a hypocrite, a doer of evil, and each one speaks folly.
