Vector reveals this dark truth in Alita: Battle Angel. He explains that Desty Nova demands tribute—specifically the brains of people he admires—and chillingly states: "And that is the only way anyone ever gets to Zalem." This line is a pivotal, sinister turning point in the film:
The Promise: Throughout the movie, Vector uses the dangling carrot of entry to Zalem as a manipulative tool. He promises Hugo that if he works as a scavenger and collects 1,000,000 credits, he will be permitted to ascend to the sky city.
