Modi just became the first Indian PM to visit Norway
in 43 years. Everyone called it a climate visit.
It wasn't.
Here's what India actually went to Oslo for:
Norway's sovereign wealth fund is the largest on
earth — over $1.7 trillion. The EFTA bloc, which
includes Norway, has committed $100 billion in
investment to India over 15 years and 1 million
direct jobs. Arctic shipping routes — controlled
by Nordic nations — will reshape global trade as
ice cover shrinks.
None of that is climate diplomacy. That is
strategic architecture.
India is building a third diplomatic lane — one
that is neither Washington nor Beijing — that it
can use as insurance when either relationship gets
difficult. Right now, both of them are difficult
simultaneously.
