Stephen Hawking spent his life studying black holes. And he discovered that they weren't actually black.
In 1974, he revolutionized physics. Against all odds, he demonstrated that a black hole can emit particles. This is called "Hawking radiation." A revolution: for the first time, someone managed to combine Einstein's general relativity (the infinitely large) and quantum mechanics (the infinitely small).
Diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) at 21, doctors gave him only two years to live. He died at 76, confined to a wheelchair, communicating via a synthesized voice.
In 1988, he published "A Brief History of Time." The book sold over 10 million copies worldwide. It remained on the bestseller list for more than four years.
He held the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics at Cambridge, the same position held by Isaac Newton before him.
He died on March 14, 2018, Einstein's birthday.
