Indian agriculture is currently facing a serious crisis. Over the past three years, nearly all sectors connected to agriculture have encountered significant challenges. In the early years after independence, around 90% of the population depended on agriculture for their livelihood. Today, that number has declined to nearly 60%, with the younger generation increasingly reluctant to adopt farming as a profession.
One of the primary reasons for this shift is the lack of adequate returns for farmers despite their hard work. Even with financial support from the government and various NGOs, many farmers are losing faith in agriculture due to persistent adverse conditions. Natural calamities such as cyclones and droughts, fluctuating market prices, the impact of mechanization, and the growing effects of climate change have all contributed to their financial instability.
The economic struggles of farmers have also had a ripple effect on agro-based industries, leading to business slowdowns and financial distress in related sectors. These challenges, in turn, are impacting the broader Indian economy.
In response to this pressing situation, Teju Films aims to create a meaningful feature film that highlights the realities faced by farmers. The film seeks to raise awareness about the urgent need to improve farmers’ financial conditions, explore effective administrative policies, and showcase the types of support necessary to uplift the agricultural sector. Through this initiative, we hope to inspire positive change and contribute to building a more sustainable and prosperous future for Indian agriculture.
