Vera Rubin discovered that stars at the edges of galaxies rotate as fast as those at the center. This defies all logic. It is proof that an invisible mass, dark matter, dominates the universe.
She observed hundreds of galaxies. Her rotation curves became irrefutable evidence. Yet, she was denied access to telescopes because she was a woman. She had to build her own equipment.
She was never awarded the Nobel Prize. She died in 2016.
