What a photo of Thessaloniki taken in 1860 suggests... Vanishing Historical Heritage!

This photo, taken in 1860, shows Thessaloniki's Byzantine-era sea walls, which have not survived to this day. They are a rare and invaluable historical document for urban historians and archaeologists.
These walls were built by Theodosius I in the 4th century. They were a strong defensive line that protected the city, an important port and strategic center of the Byzantine Empire, from naval attacks from the Gulf of Therma.
Besieged by the Slavs in the 6th and 7th centuries, by the Arabs in the 8th and 9th centuries, and resisting the Normans in 1185, the city was conquered by the Ottomans on March 29, 1430, during the reign of Murad II. It remained under Ottoman rule for 482 years until the First Balkan War, when it was captured by Greece on November 8, 1912. These 1,500-year-old sea walls were demolished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the Ottoman government sought to transform Thessaloniki into a modern, European-style city. While the goal was to create wider roads, improve the sewer system, accommodate a growing population, and facilitate trade, the loss of its historical fabric is also evident.
This photograph bears witness to the final moments of the Byzantine walls, worn but still standing, before their destruction. Sometimes, a single photograph can convey thousands of years of history in a single frame.
