Prayer to Begin the Fast Blessed are You, Adonai, King of the universe, who sustains life and knows the secrets of the heart. Today I come before You with reverence to begin this fast. Just as in the days of the Holy Temple the priests brought to the altar the daily offering, the burnt offering, the sin offering, and the peace offering, today I have neither a stone altar nor an animal sacrifice to offer. Therefore, following the words of Your prophets, I bring before You a humble and contrite heart, a spirit willing to return to Your ways. May my hunger during this day be like the smoke that rose from the altar: not because fasting has power in itself, but because it reminds me that my whole life depends on You. Just as the priest washed his hands and feet before serving in Your presence, purify also my thoughts, my words, and my actions. Just as the fire on the altar should never go out, let my desire to seek Your face, study Your Torah, and walk in righteousness never be extinguished. May this fast be for me a time of examination, of repentance, of mercy, and of renewal. Remove from me all pride, all hardness of heart, all idle words, and every action that does not honor You. Make my mouth speak truth, my hands practice kindness, and my steps follow Your paths. Remember Your people Israel with mercy. May the day come soon when Zion is restored, Jerusalem is rebuilt, and Your holy service is established according to Your will. While we await that day, receive our prayers as it is written: “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, Adonai, my Rock and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14) And as the prophet taught: “For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.” (Hosea 6:6) Merciful Father, accept this time of fasting as an opportunity to draw closer to You. Strengthen my spirit, guard my mind, and direct my heart toward Your will.
