Hampi — once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire — was one of the richest cities in the world. In 1520, Portuguese traveler Domingo Paes described Hampi as “greater than Rome.”
Diamonds were sold in baskets on the streets, gold was openly displayed in the bazaars, and merchants from all over the world came to visit. But on January 23, 1565, the great city was destroyed in a single day.
