As an immigrant I was much surprised that Turkish people don’t celebrate the New Year, while in my country it was the main holiday. So, does that mean no holiday for us at all?
We live in Antalya. The city is much oriented on foreigners but even here in the beginning of December we hardly noticed pieces of the New year. Only the biggest malls were decorated as well as Russian restaurants. Later we started to notice that palm trees around us started sparkling and even small stores opened New year corners. The park in our area was decorated in the middle of December which is much late according to Russian traditions.
It's not easy to find New year attributes, so we use delivery services and big malls. And it’s a real quest to find products for our traditional salad Oliv’ye.
Turkish people don’t have such long New year holidays as we did, but this year the number of foreigners increased, and they made 10 days holidays in Turkish school.
How do you celebrate The New Year?
