Did You Know? - Half a million cats went to war?

Across both World War I and World War II, animals became unexpected companions in the chaos of conflict — and cats were among the most remarkable.

An estimated 500,000 cats served alongside soldiers, especially during WWI and WWII, living in trenches, barracks, and aboard ships. Their presence brought comfort in impossible conditions, helped control rat populations, and in some cases, were even believed to sense changes in atmospheric pressure linked to incoming danger.

They weren’t alone. Dogs carried messages, pigeons delivered critical wartime communications, and other animals — from goats to raccoons — became unofficial mascots that helped lift morale on the front lines.

One extraordinary feline story stands out.

Simon, a ship’s cat aboard HMS Amethyst, served in the aftermath of WWII during the 1949 Yangtze Incident. Despite being wounded by shellfire, he continued to protect the ship by eliminating rats that threatened food supplies and morale. His resilience earned him the PDSA Dickin Medal — often called the animals’ Victoria Cross.

When the ship returned home, Simon was remembered in newsreels as “a hero in his own right.”

From the trenches of WWI to the ships of the post-WWII world, even the smallest creatures left their mark on history.
