Hegel's earliest main work, the Phenomenology of Spirit, has become one of the most influential philosophical works in Western thought. It is also considered among the most difficult works to read, study, and understand. In the text, Hegel traces what he takes to be all of the essential developments of human consciousness throughout its long history. In 2014, I started the Half Hour Hegel video commentary project, intending to produce a series of lecture videos to help learners make their way successfully through Hegel's text. The project reached its completely finished form in 2023, after 9 years of work, with 376 commentary videos covering every paragraph of the Phenomenology, providing line by line explanations, and using my chalkboard as a visual aid for each of the lectures This set of videos covers the third part of the Reason section of the work, Individuality Which Takes Itself To Be Real In And Of Itself, which includes the sub-sections The Spiritual Animal Kingdom, Reason As Lawgiver, and Reason As Testing Laws.
