The discussion about the age of criminal responsibility has returned to the center of public debate after the gang rape case involving two girls aged seven and ten in São Paulo. The age of criminal responsibility is the age from which a person becomes criminally liable as an adult, and this limit varies between countries. In Brazil, the law establishes 18 years as the legal benchmark, considering that before that the young person is still developing. Faced with such serious crimes, part of society defends reducing this age as a response to violence. On the other hand, there are those who argue that simply changing the law does not solve structural problems, such as the lack of prevention, education and child protection policies. This Wednesday's (6) Conversas Cruzadas, hosted by Eduardo Rosa, welcomes live the Public Prosecutor and Professor of Constitutional Law André Coelho and the lawyer, professor, PhD candidate in Law and researcher at the Observatory of Violence and Youth of UFRGS Êmille Matos, to discuss the reduction of the age of criminal responsibility.
