Tips for Choosing a Suitable Scale in Physics Practicals (Graph Plotting)
1. Understand Scaling
Scaling is the art of dividing the axes evenly so that all your observed or calculated values can fit properly on the graph.
2. Use a Significant Portion of the Graph Sheet
Your chosen scale should allow the graph to cover at least one-third to two-thirds of the graph sheet. Avoid tiny graphs—they make interpretation and marking harder.
3. Use Convenient and Simple Numbers
Select scales that are multiples of powers of ten (e.g., 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, etc.). Avoid awkward scales like 3, 7, or 9 unless absolutely necessary.
4. Start from the Origin (0,0)
Begin your graph from (0,0), especially if you're asked to determine intercepts or if the data set starts close to zero. Only skip the origin if there's a broken axis and you clearly indicate it.
5. Ensure Even Spacing
Both axes should be labeled with evenly spaced intervals. This makes the graph neat and your calculations accurate.
6. Label Your Axes Properly
Don't forget to indicate the quantity and unit on each axis, like Time (s) or Current (A).
7. Double-check Before Plotting
Before you start plotting, verify that all your values will fit within the selected scale. This helps avoid restarting midway.

HENIER CALLIPER
Venier calipers are used used to measure small lengths to the nearest 0.1mm, e.g. internal and external diameter of a hollow object, thickness of metre rule. The instrument has two sets jaws for external and internal measurement. Also, it has two scales, the MAIN and the VENIER SCALES. The venier scale which slides on the main scale is a smaller scale which enables us to measure a fraction of the smallest division on the main scale. The main scale scale is graduated in centimeters and millimeters. The reading accuracy of the venier caliper is 0.01cm.
