UPDATE : So far, so good! My fur baby has stopped vomiting every morning the moment I started switching to ‪@royalcaninchannelph‬‪@ROYALCANINofficial‬ .

Just to give you a recap, I had been feeding him different brands of dog food, but the recent one (2024) was Purina Small Breed Adult Chicken Flavor. At first, I thought this brand was a good replacement for another brand called "Selecta", which was fed to him sometime in 2023 until 2024. I can't tell you enough how much I hated this brand, because although it was affordable, it was actually the main reason why my fur baby stared vomiting on a daily basis.

Long story short, never settle for anything less, especially in terms of quality and safety.

When choosing your dog treat, make sure the ingredients are organic and it DOES NOT include Tylenol in it.

📌UPDATES :

Since April 15, 2025, I have been feeding my 9-year old small breed shih tzu with gastro issues DRY Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat Dog Food.

If I can buy a chicken fillet (breast part has no bones) OR chicken - thigh part, I would include this to his daily meals.

PROCEDURE:

Wash chicken properly with water (NO soap, of course !!!)

Boil the chicken in a pan or pot of water for a few minutes until it has turned white.

Drain and shred.

You can freeze or just put the shredded chicken inside the fridge. I just get what's enough for the week, chill it and then freeze the rest.

📌DOSAGE

1/2 cup (or 4 tbsps) x 4 times daily :

🥣 9AM
Feed 1/2 cup (or 4 tbsps) of Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat Dry Dog Food.

On a separate bowl, prepare 1/4 cup of clean drinking water (not from the faucet).

Use a dropper ( I find the syringe a choking-hazard) to measure 0.5mL of LIV 52 Vet Drops and give it to your dog 10 minutes after meals for better absorption.

🥣 2pm
Feed 1/2 cup (or 4 tbsps) of Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat Dry Dog Food.

On a separate bowl, prepare 1/4 cup of clean drinking water (not from the faucet).

🥣 6pm

NOTE :

1/2 cup to 1 cup of drinking water in a separate bowl, is the MAXIMUM amount of water a small dog can drink every day. On the other hand, most vets would say ... "Just prepare a fresh bowl of water, and let your dog drink to his heart's desire."

My take on this advice is a NO-NO. Why? Because unlike us, humans, dogs have a tendency to overdrink, just because they thought they should consume everything and anything that's in front of them, and this is not healthy for their kidneys.

Think of kidneys as a wet sponge that's being squeezed very often. It dries out and eventually, looks shredded.

In my opinion, NOT EVERYTHING a vet says is accurate. Most, if not all "doctors", are more interested in HOW MUCH they can earn from each patient: laboratory tests, doctor's fee, x-ray, gloves, cotton, prescription meds, etc.

As pet parents, we should also consider a second opinion and research on our own.

We visited several vet clinics in the city already, and none of them were able to resolve my dog's gastro issues. I just noticed that, they're so "scared" of suggesting the specific type of dog food, unless it's the brand they are selling. Otherwise, they will keep going around the bush. More tests, more doctor's fee, feed him this or that, more medicines.

Back when I still followed the vet's advice, my shih tzu was skinny as a skeleton. Now that I have been doing my own trials and errors, my shih tzu has stopped vomiting every day and is now getting fatter. I can also notice his boosted energy; he starts playing again with me, my mom, his toys and his shih tzu brother.
