The U.S. takeover in 1846 and the arrival of soldiers during the Civil War brought both protection and tension. Law was thin, and crime ranged from cattle rustling to stagecoach robberies. Albuquerque’s reputation as a waystation meant fugitives and lawmen often passed through. Outlaw legends like Billy the Kid stirred fear and fascination across New Mexico, while gun-toting folk heroes such as Elfego Baca proved that sometimes one man could stand off dozens in a firefight and live to tell the tale.

Everything changed in 1880 when the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad steamed into town. The old adobe plaza suddenly had a rival: “New Town,” a bustling district sprouting around the tracks. German merchant Franz Huning, one of Albuquerque’s great boosters, built Huning Castle and pushed the city toward modernization. The railroad brought gamblers, merchants, drifters, and speculators — and with them saloons, shootouts, and a boomtown atmosphere.

Amid this chaos, prominent Hispano families like the Armijos anchored tradition. Their grand adobe homes became symbols of deep New Mexican roots, even as Anglo entrepreneurs remade the landscape. Stories of hidden treasure, haunted haciendas, and restless spirits became part of the folklore that still lingers in Old Town’s alleys.

By the 1890s, Albuquerque was both Wild West and modern city: a place where six-shooters might still settle a score, but opera houses and rail yards signaled the future. The legend of Albuquerque’s frontier days lives on in ghost tales, outlaw myths, and the enduring plaza at Old Town — reminders that in this crossroads city, the Wild West never entirely rode away.

At White Sands National Park, researchers found fossilized human footprints dating back 21,000–23,000 years long before Egypt’s pyramids and even before the Clovis culture once thought to mark the first Americans.

The prints were preserved in the gypsum beds of ancient Lake Otero, and some even show humans crossing paths with mammoths and giant ground sloths. Scientists used advanced dating techniques to confirm the age, proving people were living here during the last Ice Age.

It’s a discovery that rewrites history, showing humans reached North America thousands of years earlier than anyone believed.

On September 1, 2025, for the first time in Albuquerque Fire’s 125 year history, an AFR Engine Company was proudly staffed with an all female crew. For the 10 hour day shift, all four positions and ranks on Engine 15 were staffed with female firefighters. One of the firefighters was Driver Burns who has 26 years of service with Albuquerque Fire.

This historic moment is a testament to these firefighters’ dedication, strength and commitment to serving Albuquerque. AFR is grateful for their hard work, trailblazing spirit, and inspiration they provide for future generations. Thank you for your service and for making AFR history! #abqfirerescue
