My Reiki Story

I first came to Reiki more than two decades ago, at a time in my life that can most kindly be described as “misspending my youth”. I went on a two-day Reiki level one course with a wonderful Reiki teacher named Marion, met the Reiki energy and learned self-healing. At the end of those days I remember walking out into the countryside with a new sense of awe and wonder, appreciation for the world and its beauty.

I didn’t continue with formal Reiki training but took what I had learned with me, and in some of the darkest depths of my life - I experienced and survived homelessness, addiction and violence - Reiki was the tool that kept me from despair. It gave me something to hold onto; a sense of agency in a world where I otherwise felt quite powerless. It did not change my situation, but it changed me enough to survive it.

Years later as I was undergoing an experimental chemotherapy for Hepatitis C, my previous experience with Reiki was enough for me to know that that was what I needed now. The chemo treatment was brutal, so much so that the first Monday that I went to see John, a Reiki Master who gave me regular treatments and eventually taught me to Reiki Master level, I had to crawl up the stairs as I didn’t have the power to bear my own weight. I kept going back every Monday, and I credit Reiki with giving me what I needed to be able to tolerate the very challenging medical treatment for long enough to be completely cured of Hep C. As soon as I was well enough I bounded up those stairs and retook Reiki 1, committed to my practice, and went on to take Reiki 2 and Reiki Master levels.

A new model: Making Reiki available for all

I’ve been teaching Reiki for years now and am still amazed anew every time one of my students takes the time to let me know the impact that Reiki has had on them and their lives, and how they are using it to empower their communities. And it is because of my students, what they are doing with Reiki, the way it has transformed their personal experience, that I am inspired to share Reiki with all.

I know that we live in times of dire inequality. As a disabled person with limited earning capacity, I have some experience of this myself, despite my intersecting privileges and living in a country that does at least have some social health and welfare access. And so I know that for some people, formal Reiki training, though it may be beneficial to them, may not be financially accessible.

This is not right, and as a Reiki teacher and professional, I am always considering what is the best way to run my business in a way that values my own hard work, appreciates the costs of keeping the business running, and yet still makes Reiki training and practice available to those with the least means. This is an evolving process and is about striking balance. I foresee that my own business will continue to evolve, and possibly become a community interest company in its right time, as the resources become available to make it so. But in the meantime, there are practical ways to do something good now, and this crowdfunder is the first invitation to this community to pool resources and send ripples of impact through the world.

How does Reiki Training impact the lives of individuals and the community?

There is a growing body of research into the benefits of Reiki practice, treatments and training. On an individual level, people tend to experience improvements in things like sleep, stress, and pain, results which improve their capacity to cope with the things that life throws at them, to be healthier, happier, and more able to engage fully in their relationships and achieve their goals.

This alone would be enough to justify sharing Reiki with anyone, especially individuals who have experienced hardships in life. But what I have learned from my own students is that at all levels, they take what they have learned in their Reiki training and they use it to benefit others around them as well. Reiki is helping to build a kinder world, something we so desperately need now more than ever.

Here are some of the things my students are doing with what they’ve learned:

Volunteering in care homes and offering Reiki treatments for residents.

Running self-healing workshops for people with ME/CFS and other chronic conditions so that they can have some healing, relaxation, and a little bit more agency.

Offering animal Reiki and animal Reiki training at rescue centres, helping the animals to feel safe and the rescuers to bond with their animal friends.

“I was at the addiction recovery center providing community Reiki and someone asked if anyone could learn it. The ensuing conversation has resulted in me setting up to teach Reiki at the center. It's pretty exciting in that they are learning and developing a skill that some could, conceivably, generate a little income from. Or be transformed in some way. Or just treating themselves or others. The possibilities are endless!!”

The Funding Goal

The aim of this first funding goal (£2580) is to offer Reiki level 1 training to twelve people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to access it. They’ll get access to a full Reiki 1 training course with mentorship, support, certification and practice with their peers. Here are some examples of the kind of impact we can make on the lives of twelve people:

If this funding model proves to be a success, we will have a second round next year to offer further development for this cohort and to open up more places to a new cohort.

Who will my donation help?

Anyone who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to take formal Reiki training can apply for one of the places. This means people with limited financial means, and the dream is to make Reiki especially accessible to people who have experienced exclusion, marginalisation, or difficulties in their life circumstances, with the objective of bringing some healing, ease, and agency. The basis on which these places will be offered is that of compassion: the recognition that we as humans share a lived experience, and we are more alike than we are different.

When will applications be open for those who'd like financial support to access Reiki?

This is a pilot project with a fundraising goal of £2580, which will allow me to give away at least twelve places on the mentored and certified Reiki Level 1 course. If we achieve this goal by the end of the financial year in April 2026, The Hermitage will expand this funding model to offer even more places next year, including on Practitioner and Master level courses.

However we don't have to wait until then to start sharing Reiki! As soon as the first £215 is in, the amount that allows me to give one course enrolment away, I'll open the application process and get the Reiki training out there in the world, bringing peace, healing, and beautiful surprises with it.

If you choose and you know someone who would benefit now, you can also purchase the Reiki Level 1 course (or any Hermitage Reiki course or collection) for a friend or loved one as a gift, simply by selecting the gift option at checkout. Feeling very peaceful today after finishing  @danyogafit  21 Day Journey to Self Through the Elements.

I have 'done' yoga for the best part of two decades now, and always found it peaceful and beneficial, but in the last couple of years with Daniel's teachings I have started to understand the depth of it, to feel the energetics and philosophy and to broaden my understanding of practice (and awarenessof how much broader my understanding could be!).

The 21 day element journey uses accessible chair yoga, breathwork, mudra and meditation to bring all five elements through. It has felt immensely restorative for me and I think I might just follow it through again!
