Back when I was about 19, I tried to learn the bass line to YYZ note-for-note. I never did quite get it 100% perfect (especially the one-off fills he absolutely RIPS), but it taught me a ton about technique, precision and speed.

Today is his 71st birthday so Happy Birthday Geddy and thanks for all the music!

What’s your absolute favorite Geddy Lee/Rush bass line?

I'm curious. How many bassists played instruments OTHER than bass before you started playing bass? And if so, how many?

And if bass wasn't your first instrument, leave a comment saying what you played before.

*Scammer Alert*

There's been a renewed flurry of scammers targeting the comment sections of mine (and a ton of other creators') channels. In this particular scam, they tell you that you've won a 'free' guitar and all you have to do is pay for shipping. It can feel quite convincing. They use my actual photos and it seems very 'real'.

Rest assured though, there is no free guitar - they will simply take your money.

Please know that I will NEVER ask you to text me on Telegram or any other messaging app OR ask you to pay for shipping for a giveaway. Also, I have never even run a giveaway, but these scammers are obviously lazy and don't do their research. They just rely on sheer numbers and hope that eventually, some people will believe them.

If you're in the comment section of one of my videos, my username will always have a little 'tick' next to it. That's how you know you're actually talking to me and not one of these scam accounts.

I'm very sorry if you've been targeted by this/these scammers. Any time a new scam channel pops up, I do my best to catch it quickly, but like weeds, they just keep coming back.

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them in the comments of this post.

Cheers,
Luke

P.S. I've spent a quite bit of time messing with these scammers posing as a 'winner' for various channels they operate and have been taking up as much time of theirs as possible. Every second they think they're scamming me is time that they won't spend trying to scam others. Of course I never provide any legit personal information to them - like a real email address, phone number or anything else. It's not something I recommend others do, but it makes me smile knowing that they're wasting their time and thinking they're actually going to extract money from some poor, unsuspecting victim.

Learn secrets from nearly 20 of the world's leading bassists - for FREE! And it starts in less 24 hours.

Over the past few months, I've got together and sat down with nearly 20 world-class bassists for masterclasses on everything from technique, to tone, groove, improvisation, practice - even how to make a living as a bass player.

To get a lesson from just one of these bassists would cost a fair bit of money. If you wanted to learn from all 20 different teachers, it would cost thousands…

With the Become A Bassist Summit though, you can learn from some of the best bassists in the world (and even some personal mentors of mine) and see exactly how they approach playing…

And it’s all free.

Here’s a taste of who’s involved and what you’ll learn:

► Bryan Beller (bassist for Steve Vai, The Aristocrats and Joe Satriani) will show you how he crafts the perfect tone for every song he plays, and how you can too

► Tim Lefebvre (bassist for David Bowie and the Tedeschi/Trucks band) explains his process for improvising so everything feels incredible

► Ryan Madora (bassist for Robben Ford) will show you how to confidently ‘hold down the fort’ during any blues jam session - even if playing in public scares the sh*t out of you

► Anthony Crawford (who’s played with Erykah Badu, Allan Holdsworth) will show you the art of the hustle and how to make money and make a living as a bass player

► Damian Erskine (Jaco Pastorius Big Band) will show you how to develop your ‘rhythmic muscular memory’ to develop rock-solid time alongside incredible feel

► Nashville session legend Roy Vogt will show you how to add chromatic notes to your bass lines, fills and solos to open up your creativity

► [Advanced] You’ll learn from Gospel Chops veteran Mark Peric how to build a 4-finger ‘Gary Willis/Matt Garrison’ plucking-hand technique, plus how and where to use it for maximum effect

► Nick Clark (who plays bass for Kanye West’s Sunday Services) will show you how to develop an incredible feel on bass, plus how to connect with any audience

These masterclasses aren’t just surface-level ‘tips’. I’ve probed each and every one of these bassists for their deepest bass-playing insights.

I also did my best to make sure that every masterclass was as practical as possible, so you can actually use the collective wisdom of all these bassists to meaningfully improve your playing.

The entire event is run online, so no matter where you are in the world, you can learn from masters of the instrument.

I can’t tell you how excited I am to share all of this with you. It’s been a lot of work putting it all together, and it’s going to be a huge week with tons to learn.

I hope to see you at the Summit!

Check out this virtual concert I'm a part of - presented by the legendary Australian jazz drummer, John Morrison! I'll be playing a quick 15-minute spot playing some original music with a great friend of mine, Zak Scerri.

Not sure exactly when I'll be playing, but the concert features some of the heaviest jazz musicians in Australia, so the whole thing will be worth a watch.

Come and cheer me and my friends on! It all starts in about 15 minutes.

Sorry everyone - having some tech issues here, so I'll have to cancel live stream that was scheduled for today. I'll do my best to have it fixed for Thursday though.

What do you want me to cover/teach on the next stream?
