The talking drum is more than an instrument — it is a voice for centuries, it has been used to speak, sing, praise, warn, bless, and celebrate in Yoruba land and across Africa.
This drum carries messages, emotions, and stories in a way no other instrument can. The talking drum is deeply rooted in African history and Yoruba culture. When you play, you are not only making music — you are continuing a tradition that has existed for generations.

1. Holding the Drum Too Low
One of the most common mistakes beginners make is positioning the drum too low on the body.
When the drum hangs too low:
• Your arm loses control.
• Your squeezing technique becomes weak.
• The sound becomes inconsistent.
• You struggle to respond quickly during performance.
The talking drum is an extension of your body. It should rest comfortably under your arm — not at your waist level.
Correct positioning:
• The drum should sit slightly above your waist.
• Your upper arm should comfortably press the tension cords.
• Your elbow should not be stretched or locked.
If the drum is too low, your “voice” becomes weak.
If it is positioned correctly, the drum speaks clearly.
2. Over-Squeezing the Ropes
Many beginners think louder squeezing means better sound.
That is wrong.
Over-squeezing:
• Distorts the pitch.
• Makes the sound choke.
• Causes hand fatigue.
• Reduces tonal clarity.
The talking drum is not about force — it is about control.
Pitch change should be smooth and intentional, not aggressive. The ropes respond to subtle pressure. When you squeeze too hard, the drum stops “talking” and starts “shouting.”
As a talking drummer, your goal is communication — not noise.
3. Striking Too Hard
Another major mistake is hitting the drum with excessive force.
Beginners often believe power equals performance.
But in traditional African drumming — especially the talking drum — precision matters more than power.
Striking too hard:
• Damages the drum skin.
• Produces harsh tones.
• Reduces tonal control.
• Shortens the lifespan of your instrument.
The curved stick is designed for technique, not aggression.
A controlled strike produces:
• Clear tones
• Smooth transitions
• Expressive rhythm
Remember: The drum is speaking. Don’t beat the voice out of it.
4. Poor Posture
Posture affects everything — sound, stamina, and stage presence.
Poor posture can:
• Cause back pain.
• Reduce breath control.
• Affect rhythm timing.
• Make you look unprofessional on stage.
Stand upright.
Relax your shoulders.
Keep your spine aligned.
Let your body look as confident as your rhythm sounds.
When your posture is strong, your performance is powerful.

Why Tones Matter!
Talking drum language depends on tone changes. Without tones, the drum is just noise. With tones, it becomes speech. Spend time mastering these three tones before moving forward.
1. High Tone
This is the sharpest and loudest sound.
MI /
How to play it:
• Strike firmly
• Squeeze the tension ropes tightly
Use:
• Calling attention
• Excitement
• Emphasis
• Fast praise rhythms
2. Middle Tone
This is the natural sound of the drum.
RE
How to play it:
• Strike the drum normally
• Apply light pressure to the ropes
Use:
• Everyday playing
• Most praise and worship patterns
• Transitions between tones
3. Low Tone
This is the deepest sound the drum produces.
DO \
How to play it:
• Strike the drum gently
• Do not squeeze the tension ropes
Use:
• Calm expressions
• Slow rhythms
• Background support
• Emotional depth
