When you are first venturing into a new skill, drilling for reps is a very helpful tool in your learning. Skills are essentially what we call a person's ability to perform movements at the right time and in the right context. If we apply a good movement at the wrong time or in the wrong context, your movement—no matter how sharp—will fail. If we apply a poor movement at the right time and in the right context, you will likely fail. If you apply a good movement in the proper context but with the wrong timing, you will also fail. Therefore, a drilling session that is conducive to skill acquisition will keep all three of these elements in mind: it will properly develop movement quality, timing, and context. If any of these three elements are not taken into consideration in your drilling, that is when you end up with a monotonous waste of time.
Drilling for reps—also termed "uchikomi" by the judoka of old—allows a novice to familiarize himself with and refine a movement in its proper context and with its proper timing in a very condensed period of time. It is, in effect, a very efficient method of giving the novice hyper-exposure—that is, a highly concentrated volume of exposure—to the essential aspects of the skill he is trying to understand and build. If you dilute this exposure—for example, by adding too much resistance too early—you will prolong the novice's ability to gain familiarity with the three essentials needed for the skill set, especially in the beginning of the learning phase, where learning is by nature already slow. Less resistance is needed, not more.
I’ll be showing more about implementing uchikomi in my upcoming Drill for Skill instructional series coming to @BJJ.Fanatics soon
