“Are men superior to women in Islam?”
This is one of the most misunderstood concept from Surah An-Nisa…
But the truth is ..
Allah does NOT say that men are inherently superior to women.
The Quran says: “some of them have been given advantage over others” (بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ) not absolute superiority.
Surah An-Nisa (4:34) is often quoted:
“Ar-rijālu qawwāmūna ‘ala an-nisā’”
“Men are qawwam (maintainers/responsible) over women.”
But Qawwam ≠ Superior.
It means:
• Provider
• Protector
• Responsible
• Financially accountable
similaly Women are given unique virtues that men don’t have — like motherhood and nurturing
It’s about Role, not Rank
Being Qawwam is not a privilege. It’s a heavy responsibility
It’s not a status upgrade it’s a test from Allah.
If a man fails to provide, protect, or be just
He is answerable to Allah.
Stop twisting this verse to feed your ego. It wasn’t meant to glorify you it was meant to humble you.
What about spiritual worth?
Men and women are equal before Allah:
Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13)
“The most noble in Allah’s sight is the one with the most Taqwa.”
Surah An-Nahl (16:97)
“Whoever does good male or female We will give them a good life.”
Surah Al-Ahzab (33:35)
Allah lists believing men and women equally in every virtue.
No verse says “Men are better.”
Islam is not about competition… it’s about balance.
