Adivasi Lives Matter

International Biodiversity Day 🌿

For Adivasis, biodiversity is not just about forests, rivers, birds, or animals it is a way of life.

From the songs of the Sarjom tree to the smell of Mahua flowers, from traditional seeds to sacred groves, our ancestors have protected nature for generations without calling it “conservation.”

When forests survive, cultures survive.
When biodiversity is protected, indigenous wisdom lives on.

International Biodiversity Day, let’s listen to the communities who have always lived in harmony with the Earth. 🌏

Adivasi Lives Matter

On this day, we remember Dharanidhar Naik (5 May 1864), a fearless Adivasi leader born in Kusumita, Keonjhar, who stood against oppression during British rule.

At a time when the king of Keonjhar, Dhanurjaya Bhanja, imposed harsh systems like forced labour (Bethi) and unjust grain laws, the lives of Adivasi communities were pushed to extreme suffering. But resistance rose from the ground.

Between 1891–1893, Dharanidhar Naik led a powerful rebellion, uniting the Kol, Bhuyan, and Juang communities. He even fought the historic battle of Subarn, challenging both feudal injustice and colonial control.

This was not just a fight against a ruler it was a fight for dignity, land, and rights.

Remembering the courage of Adivasi resistance.

Adivasi Lives Matter

This Labour Day, remember those who build cities while losing homes.

Many Adivasi workers migrate not out of choice, but because land, forests, water, and traditional livelihoods are taken away or made impossible to sustain. What is often called “migration” is, for many, a story of displacement and survival.

They travel far from their villages to work in construction sites, brick kilns, factories, farms, mines, and homes, doing some of the hardest and most invisible labour that keeps the country moving. They build roads they may never walk freely on, raise buildings they may never live in, and produce wealth they may never share in.
Yet their contributions are rarely acknowledged. Instead, many face low wages, unsafe conditions, debt traps, language barriers, exploitation, and exclusion from welfare systems. Women workers carry an even heavier burden of underpaid labour and unpaid care work.

Their labour powers India. Their rights remain ignored.

Labour Day should not only celebrate work. It should ask who bears its heaviest cost, and who remains unseen behind development.
