One of India’s most accomplished middle distance runners, Jinson Johnson, has officially announced his retirement from competitive athletics. An Olympian (Rio 2016), Arjuna Awardee, and a trailblazer of Indian 800 m and 1500 m running, Jinson’s career played a crucial role in redefining India’s presence in middle distance events.

He etched his name in history by breaking Sriram Singh’s 42-year-old 800 m national record in 2018 and later setting the 1500 m national record in 2019 and records that, although later surpassed, marked a turning point for Indian middle-distance running.
