The Autonomy of Sound and Surrender to Contingency
“Askesis of Sine and Noise” or “Controlled Contingency”
I explore the “autonomy” inherent in sound itself. When I first encountered Ryoji Ikeda's work, I was struck by the purity of sound stripped down to its absolute essence. That yearning for minimalism has now transformed within me into the form of “eliminating artifice.” Distancing myself from the arbitrary structures of commercial music and designs that manipulate listeners' emotions, I use the iPad—a modern device—as a “microscope.” I pass the ambient sounds overflowing from the outside world through the filter of digital processing, waiting for the moment when the pure sine waves extracted from it intersect with unpredictable dissonance. Sounds brought about by chance sometimes disrupt harmony, playing dissonance. Yet it is precisely this “uncontrollable fluctuation” that embodies the authenticity I seek. Not constructing, but letting go. Not describing, but observing. Following my roots' thirst for “improvisation” and “chance,” I continue to record the nameless phenomena lurking within digital silence.
