It’s been an amazing day guiding a small group today and we’ve seen some dolmens and Knights Templar sites.

After visiting a couple of dolmens this morning, we made our way to Castelo de Almourol and Convento de Cristo, two remarkable Knights Templar sites in central Portugal.

This is Castelo de Almourol, a beautiful castle rising from a small island in the Tagus River and one of the most iconic structures in medieval Portugal. Clicks pics for full photos.

The Knights Templar rebuilt the castle in 1171, although the island is thought to have been occupied long before by pre-Roman Lusitanian groups.

It’s beautiful, a fairytale setting steeped in the history of the Knights Templar.

We also spent time exploring Convento de Cristo in Tomar, founded by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. It’s breathtaking and I’ll share photos soon.

Through my photos and videos I always try to convey what it feels like to stand within these megalithic sites and landscapes, but the reality is you can never truly experience them until you are there in person surrounded by the atmosphere, scale and energy of these places.

Last week I returned from guiding a journey through Clava Cairns, Orkney and Lewis & Harris and this message from Jim meant a lot:

I’m very happy and grateful to be megalith hunting today with Gaia in the Leiria district of Portugal.

This beauty of a dolmen is Anta 1 do Rego da Murta.

Complexo Megalítico do Rego da Murta is a megalithic complex and there are two main dolmens which can be seen.

It’s a wee bit of a mission to find the dolmens. We got lost a few times on the way here, it’s very hot today, it’s set in this eucalyptus forest which is very overgrown, there’s lots of bushes and the two dolmens are kinda hidden.

Gaia and I are now taking shade for a while before I attempt to find my car and head home!

So our 9 day journey into ancient Scotland has come to an end.

This journey has taken us deep into Scotland’s most breathtaking ancient sites and landscapes including Clava Cairns, Orkney, the Isle of Lewis and Harris.

It’s not only the ancient sites that make these places so special, but also the landscapes, beaches, wildlife, atmosphere, food and the feeling of being immersed in these remarkable environments.

I’m grateful to Nadine, Jim, Nadia and Kristin for the trust to join me on this journey and for making it such a great experience.

I hope you will come away from this journey with memories and experiences that will stay with you long after you leave.

Callanish IV Stone Circle sits about a mile and a half from the main Callanish site.

The location, landscape, the stones and the shapes of the stones makes this a very special place.

There are five lichen-covered beautiful lewissian gneiss stones forming an ellipse. The tallest stone is around 9 feet high.

The shapes of the stones are interesting and feel very intentional. Three of the stones have pointed tops, while two are flat. I think the shapes are chosen for the way they interact with the landscape.
