if i made a video on a game you didn't really care about (helldivers, for example,) but discussed the game's lore, would you still watch it?
i'm realizing gradually that the market for talking about game design might be smaller than i thought it was, and talking about writing & lore instead seems much more widely popular.
thanks!

how to make one section of one of my videos:

step 1
make novel observation about deadlocks artstyle
step 2
look into how it was done
step 3
find debug console command by chance
step 4
have to consult a few game developers i know to decipher the hieroglyphics given to me by the debug command
step 5
now i know how shaders work :)

i'm not sure if the section about them will even make it into the video. what was meant to be a quick ~3min long distraction ended up into a ~3hr long delve into technicalities. instead of just saying "the game looks good."
that's why my videos take so long to make.
well...that, and adhd.

with highguard being properly released today, here are my proper thoughts on it:

it's pretty good.
i feel bad for having contributed to how insanely hard people are ragging on it for no good reason, because quite honestly, the game was fun from what i played, even if i don't like the artstyle that much.

it has done a remarkably bad done marketing itself and i think that's contributed significantly to how much people blindly hate it.

gameplay wise, it's actually innovative, which is really refreshing to see. the gameplay is hard to describe because there's genuinely nothing like it. it's a 3v3 in a giant map with resource management which turns into a siege-style...siege of someone's base. the gunplay is fun, the looting is apex legends, and it'll be fun to see how people tackle strats in the looting phase, weighing up splitting up vs. grouping, etc.

IMO, the ttk was astronomically short and you move a lil too slow on the mount, so the maps feel way too big for a 3v3 fight. but that's relatively easy to fix.

what's less easy to fix is that i think it has some pretty core design flaws in that the attacker is punished if they fail to...attack, which means that more often than not - IN MY LIMITED PLAYTIME - giving up the siege tower repeatedly and mining rocks for 10min seemed like the best play.

that being said, as i said, it was fun. i would recommend it, it's free :)

if you are seeing this post, please tell me how. I can't remember the last time YouTube showed me a community post and I genuinely don't know where they even show up now. do they only get recommended on mobile? do you *have* to look for them manually? how often do they even show up
thanks im a boomer
