No urgency, thanks: SC refuses to hear PIL seeking complete ban on cow slaughter
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday, May 26, refused to grant urgent hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking effective implementation of the law imposing a complete ban on cow slaughter ahead of Bakrid.
“You remembered this a day before. No urgency. Thanks,” said a bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.
Advocate Barun Kumar Sinha mentioned the matter before the bench, seeking an urgent hearing. “We are seeking a hearing so that if your lordships are persuaded, an interim order can be passed,” he orally submitted.
“Day after tomorrow is Bakrid. This is a plea to seek implementation of anti-cow slaughter law. If this can be listed tomorrow,” Sinha said.
The plea, filed by Satish Kumar Aggarwal, former vice-president of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, seeks directions to enforce anti-slaughter laws to protect the cow and its progeny from slaughter. It also wants a direction to state governments to notify guidelines for regulating slaughterhouses in each and every state in accordance with law.

"Breaking: NEET UG 2026 Cancelled by NTA Amid Paper Leak Allegations; Fresh Exam to Be Held"
New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Tuesday (12 May 2026) announced the cancellation of the NEET (UG) 2026 examination held on 3 May 2026.In a press release, NTA stated that following inputs examined in coordination with central agencies and findings from law enforcement, the exam "could not be allowed to stand." The decision was taken with the approval of the Government of India to maintain transparency and the integrity of the examination process.Key Points:The exam will be re-conducted on dates to be notified soon.
Existing registration, candidature, and chosen exam centres will be carried forward. No fresh registration or additional fee is required.
Fees already paid will be refunded.
The matter has been referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive probe. NTA will fully cooperate with the investigation.
New admit cards will be re-issued as per the updated schedule.

Passengers evacuated from the hantavirus-hit cruise ship began flying home aboard military and government planes after the vessel anchored in the Canary Islands, with one American testing positive and a French traveller developing symptoms for the pathogen aboard their separate

One the 17 American passengers evacuated from the MV Hondius tested positive for the hantavirus but is not showing any symptoms, US health officials said late Sunday. Earlier, one of the five French passengers developed symptoms on their flight home, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said in a statement, and all were put into strict isolation with plans to be tested.

Passengers were evacuated off the MV Hondius following its arrival in Tenerife, the largest island in the Spanish archipelago off the West African coast.
Earlier, officials from the Spanish Health Ministry, the World Health Organisation and the cruise company Oceanwide Expeditions had said none of the more than 140 people who were then on the Hondius had shown symptoms of the virus.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation tonight at 8.30 pm, a day after a bill to implement women’s reservation in legislatures was defeated in the Lok Sabha.
“The Prime Minister will address the nation at 8.30 PM (April 18, Saturday),” an official said.

Modi is expected to delve into the issue of implementation of women’s quota and the happenings in Parliament, where opposition parties on Friday voted against the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill.
Under the Bill, Lok Sabha seats were to be increased up to 816 from the current 543 to “operationalise” the women’s reservation law before the 2029 parliamentary polls, following a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census. Seats were also to be increased in state and UT assemblies to accommodate 33 per cent reservation for women.

A two-thirds majority was required for the passage of the crucial bill but the ruling BJP-led alliance could not muster the numbers.

During polling on the bill in the Lok Sabha on Friday night, 298 members voted in its support, while 230 MPs voted against it.
Out of 528 members who voted, the bill required 352 votes for a two-thirds majority.

Hyderabad: Babban Khan, the legendary playwright and performer who created the iconic Adrak ke Panje, passed away on Friday, April 17, at 8 pm. He had been in the Intensive Care Unit for the past week. He is survived by his wife and two children.
His funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at a graveyard in Shantinagar, the neighbourhood where he lived for several years.
