Defence Brief

The United States is deploying additional Patriot air defense system as demand for missile interception rises amid ongoing regional conflicts. Reports suggest that interceptor stocks are under pressure, highlighting the challenges of sustaining air and missile defence during prolonged military operations.

At the same time, the THAAD is also facing heavy operational demand. Together, these systems form a key part of the U.S. and allied missile defence network, designed to counter ballistic and advanced aerial threats.

The situation raises broader strategic questions about missile defence readiness, defence logistics, and the sustainability of high-intensity warfare in an increasingly volatile global security environment.

Production of the HAL Tejas fighter jet has been facing delays due to the ongoing global jet engine shortage, even as orders for India’s indigenous fighter programme continue to grow.

To address the issue, GE Aerospace has committed to deliver 30 F404 engines annually to support Tejas production. The F404-IN20 engine is specifically designed and adapted for Indian operating conditions, providing the power required for the Light Combat Aircraft programme.

The Tejas programme remains a key part of India’s push for indigenous defence manufacturing and air power modernisation.

Defence Brief

Amidst the Strait of Hormuz crisis, the U.S. has given India temporary permission to unload Russian oil.

Due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have been disrupted. To ease global supply pressure, the U.S. Treasury Department has issued a 30-day waiver allowing Indian refiners to unload Russian oil that is already on ships.

The waiver is valid from March 5 to April 4 and only applies to cargo that was already in transit.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described it as a short-term measure, saying it would not provide significant financial benefit to Russia since it only covers oil currently stranded at sea.

At the same time, the U.S. expects India to increase purchases of American oil in the future.

Another interesting development in the world of energy politics and geopolitics.
