Yuri Gagarin (1934–1968) was a Soviet cosmonaut and the first human to travel into space. On April 12, 1961, aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1, he completed a single orbit around Earth, marking a major milestone in the Space Race and human history.
Gagarin became an international hero and a symbol of Soviet achievement. Before his spaceflight, he was a trained pilot in the Soviet Air Forces. Afterward, he worked in training and public roles but continued contributing to the space program.
He died at the age of 34 in a jet training accident under circumstances that were later investigated but remain partly unclear.
