A US military delegation met with Lebanon's army in Beirut to discuss the implementation of Israel's withdrawal from a 'pilot zone' in southern Lebanon , a Lebanese military official said on Saturday.

Israel will gradually withdraw from areas of southern Lebanon where it has deployed troops to fight Hezbollah, under a framework agreement reached on 26 June.

As part of the agreement, the Lebanese military will take full control of two small areas dubbed pilot zones.

Israel’s war on Lebanon, which resumed in March, has displaced more than a million people, and killed over 4,322.

Rights groups have raised alarm over a government-backed proposal that could restrict political activity in Israeli universities, warning it risks undermining academic freedom and further silencing Palestinian voices on campus.

Speaking to The New Arab on Saturday, Index on Censorship said the proposed measures – framed as promoting "institutional neutrality" – could significantly curb freedom of expression within higher education institutions.

"It - the proposal - will further chill speech for Palestinians on campus, who we’ve already seen being targeted in various ways," Jemimah Steinfeld, CEO of Index on Censorship, told The New Arab.

The move comes amid an ongoing academic boycott of Israel, driven by international criticism over Israel's war on Gaza, which has killed at least 73,221 Palestinians and injured 173,643 since October 2023, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

A major investigation into a Tennessee church has shed light on a rapidly growing movement within American Christianity that interprets Iran, Israel, Islam and global politics through the lens of a literal war between God and Satan – whose ideas are influential within Donald Trump's political orbit.

The investigation shows how the church's ideas frame American conflicts as a "spiritual war", with these ideas long coexisting with more traditional forms of Christian Zionism. "The spiritual warfare approach to Christian Zionism has been around at least since the 1980s," Daniel G. Hummel, director of the Lumen Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a historian of American evangelicalism and Christian Zionism, told The New Arab.

US Democratic lawmaker Ro Khanna said he was detained by Israeli settlers armed with US-made rifles during a West Bank visit this week.

"If you're unwilling to speak up for Palestinian human rights, if you're unwilling to speak up against the genocide in Gaza, the apartheid in the West Bank, then you are morally compromised," Khanna said.

He said he chose to do a visit exclusively to the West Bank, with programming led by Palestinians, to give him an unfiltered view of territory Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

The General Synod of the Church of England, who is scheduled to meet from 10-14 July in New York, will be considering a motion to engage with a document issued by Kairos Palestine, a Palestinian Christian ecumenical movement.

The report, titled 'A Moment of Truth: Faith in a Time of Genocide' and published on 14 November, 2025, is a theological and political appeal from Palestinian Christian calling on Christians across the world to stand in solidarity with their Palestinian counterparts as well as applying pressure on governments and global civil society to "isolate, boycott, divest from, and sanction Israel".

The report describes Israel as a "colonial, settler and exclusionary entity", and calls on churches across the world "to distinguish between dialogue with Jews and dialogue with Zionism".
