Compounding the suffering of civilians on the ground, Lebanese ambulance crews have been prevented from entering Lebanese towns and villages hit by Israeli strikes.
Under the terms of a ceasefire deal reached in November 2024 to end that year’s Israeli war on Lebanon, a body known officially as the Military Technical Committee for Lebanon, but commonly referred to as the “Mechanism” was set up to oversee the truce.
While the Mechanism is tasked with monitoring the ceasefire, amid the current war it has been accused of exceeding its authority and effectively stopping rescue operations.

The world recoiled in horror last week as Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, personally administered abuse to international activists detained and tortured by his government after intercepting their life-saving flotilla mission to Gaza.
Western leaders and foreign ministers made strongly worded statements. The UK's Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper summoned the Israeli ambassador, demanding an 'explanation', apparently shocked by his behaviour, though less so perturbed by the genocide in Gaza.
Yet behind this pantomime of faux outrage and boutique sanctions on Israeli settler extremists, lies a deliberate denial of the true nature of Israel, its bad behaviour conveniently blamed on repulsive villains like Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.

In December 2025, Israel became the first country to officially recognise the breakaway republic of Somaliland. Then in May, Somaliland then announced that it would open its first foreign embassy in Jerusalem, joining only a handful of countries to have done so.
But what’s driving these new ties?
For the past 35 years, Somaliland’s government has lobbied tirelessly for recognition, and now gains a powerful ally and access to technological, agricultural, and economic expertise.
For Tel Aviv, facing greater regional and global isolation, it is useful diplomatically, but the key lies in Somaliland’s strategic geography.
But will Somaliland become a vassal state in a great power game? And could the country be drawn deeper into a complex web of Red Sea rivalries?

Hadi fled to Saudi Arabia in 2015 when war erupted between the Iran-backed Houthis, who had forced the government from the capital Sanaa, and a Saudi-led coalition.
He handed over his powers—reportedly under Saudi pressure—to the newly announced Presidential Leadership Council in April 2022, as Yemen entered a United Nations-brokered ceasefire.

Republic of Ireland football captain Nathan Collins has confirmed that squad members will not be prevented from expressing personal views regarding their upcoming match against Israel.
Speaking amid heightened political scrutiny and calls to boycott the match, Collins asserted that players on the Irish team were "entitled to their own opinions" and will not be held back from taking personal stands.
While acknowledging the intense debate surrounding the genocide in Gaza, Collins stressed that the team remains focused on their on-pitch responsibilities while placing trust in the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to navigate the logistical complexities.
Earlier this month, an open letter from Irish Sport for Palestine addressed to the FAI urged Ireland's national team to refuse to participate in two scheduled fixtures against Israel in September and October.

The UN has reportedly placed Israel on its “blacklist” of entities suspected of committing sexual violence in conflict, according to Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Dannon (pictured), who condemned the move as “outrageous”
Speaking after reports emerged of the decision, Dannon said the listing would apply to multiple Israeli bodies, including the Israeli Prison Service, and dismissed it as “another lie from the UN” driven by politics rather than evidence

Ameera Hashwi, a Lebanese-American attorney, was crowned Miss Wayne County late last year, becoming the first titleholder in the pageant’s history to wear a hijab. She is set to compete in the Miss Michigan 2026 pageant this year.
Marking the 100th Memorial Day parade in Dearborn, Hashwi represented Wayne County - which includes Dearborn, Detroit and some of its suburbs - as she rode on the back of a car, waving to spectators while holding an American flag.
Videos of the scene posted online drew a surge of hostile and derogatory responses, including anti-Islam influencer Valentina Gomez, who wrote: “She’d be stoned for showing her face in any sharia nation.”
Dearborn, which in 2023 became the first Arab-majority city in the US, is home to the Arab American National Museum and the largest mosque in North America.

Actors Miriam Margoyles, Alex Lawther, Billy Howle and MyAnna Buring, and playwrights Caryl Churchill, Sabrina Mahfouz, and Hannah Khalil are among 262 artists calling on five leading theatre companies based in London to end partnerships with Bloomberg Philanthropies over its ties to Israel.
In an open letter published today, the writers, actors, dancers, directors, producers, musicians and artists say that, in partnering with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Court, the Young Vic, and the Almeida are “actively undermining” their own ethical commitments.
Bloomberg Philanthropies funds the Bloomberg-Sagol Center for City Leadership at Tel Aviv University. The centre provides leadership training to mayors and municipal officials, including those governing illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine’s occupied West Bank. The open letter sets out new evidence compiled by Artists for Palestine UK that documents the centre’s complicity in a “violent project of settlement that the International Court of Justice has declared to be a war crime”.
