What actually happens in your mind when you meditate?
When you first sit down, your mind is usually busy. Thinking about everything. Jumping around. Totally normal. This is the thinking mind (Beta).
Then you bring your attention to your breath, and things start to soften a little. Not perfect. Not silent. Just a bit slower.
You might notice moments where there’s a bit more space, where you’re not as caught up in every thought.
This is where the brain often begins to shift into a more relaxed state (Alpha).
It doesn’t happen in a straight line either. Your mind will wander, come back, wander again. That is the practice.
The brain moves fluidly, often between Alpha and deeper meditative states such as Theta, where awareness turns more inward.
Over time, you might feel more calm. Or clearer. Or just a little less reactive to everything going on. Sometimes even really deep rest (associated with Delta in certain practices such as Yoga Nidra).
And at times, there can be moments of clarity or insight, linked to higher-level integration in the brain (Gamma).
Meditation is the practice of observing your thoughts without automatically reacting to them, helping regulate the nervous system and create more space between stimulus and response.
And over time, this supports a shift in how the brain and nervous system respond, not just during practice, but throughout daily life.

Arm balances were never my strength.
For a long time, I had a real fear of falling, that my arms would just collapse underneath me and I’d land straight on my face, and I often did!
But Crow Pose (Bakasana), for me, is a check-in.
Physically, but also mentally.
Where am I today?
Am I focused?
Am I present?
Can I trust myself here?
Some days it’s there, that steadiness, that internal focus.
And some days it’s not.
And that’s the practice.
Crow asks for:
Balance
Focus
Coordination
Core engagement
And a willingness to lean into discomfort, without panic.
It’s about finding your external and internal drishti, that steady point of focus that keeps you grounded, even when things feel a little uncertain.
And maybe most of all, it’s about learning how to fall, without fear taking over.

There is so much that is out of our control.
It’s okay to acknowledge overwhelm, fear, or even outrage. It means you are human.
It means you care. It means you are a good person.
Focus on what you can control each day. Your breath. Where you place your attention.
There’s a saying, that what you focus on, you empower.
If the news feels like too much, maybe limit it to a few minutes a day.
Give yourself permission to not have to take it all in.
Instead, breathe, meditate, go for a walk (nature if you can), connect with someone you trust.
