My Channel is a little slice of life. You might find sermons or other spiritual things. You might also find videos of family. And you will find the video series on the Renovation of our New Cottage!

My goal is to form, inform, and transform you, the reader, as I try and make a difference from my little corner of the world. I believe that if we transform our inner lives and the way we think about things, we can truly make a difference in the world. The Spirituality of the Christian Church is a way in which can make this change, and deep, abiding spirituality.

The Humble Carpenter’s Pencil

The carpenter’s pencil is a fantastic tool. Sure, one can and perhaps should use a marking gauge, but the pencil is in the pouch and takes up the box of almost every carpenter.

I always thought that the main purpose of the carpenter’s pencil was its flat shape, which prevented it from rolling away. How many times have I used a standard number two pencil only to have it roll off an uneven surface of whatever I was working on? The carpenter’s pencil stays put and waits for the carpenter to pick it up again.

But, as I found out today, the pencil has another purpose. One side of the pencil measures half an inch while the other measures a quarter of an inch. These are the two most common measurements that a finish carpenter uses. But it gets even better.

On the quarter-inch side, there is a bevel. This bevel allows another pencil to ride in it to produce a perfect line at the quarter-inch mark. It seems to me that this one tool has revolutionized the way a carpenter works.
