The Northern City Line (NCL), between Finsbury Park and Moorgate in the City of London, recently celebrated one year since its physical lineside signals were removed.

NCL became Great Britain’s first ‘no signals’ commuter railway in May 2025, and since then passengers have travelled on almost 70,000 train services operated by Great Northern using digital in-cab signalling.

The groundbreaking NCL project is a vital ‘pathfinder’ for the introduction (from later this year) of digital signalling to the East Coast Main Line (ECML), enabling a more reliable, more efficient, greener and even safer railway. This is the largest and most complex digital signalling migration undertaken anywhere in the world.

The European Train Control System (ETCS) is a signalling, control and train protection system designed to replace the many incompatible safety systems currently used by European railways, especially on high-speed lines.

In this special documentary, we take a look how ETCS will revolutionise the way we deliver signalling and how it will reshape the future of rail.

We have some news to share, and while it means saying goodbye to an exceptional CEO, we couldn't be prouder.

Angie Doll has been appointed Managing Director, Rail for Go-Ahead Australia & New Zealand, taking up her new role on 1 June. It's a fantastic opportunity and one that feels entirely right for someone who has given so much to this railway.

Angie started with Southern nearly 27 years ago as a station manager in Brighton. She leaves as CEO of Britain's largest rail operator having spent her career building something she, and all of us, can be genuinely proud of.

Under her leadership, GTR has delivered some of its most significant achievements:

🚉 £192 million in social value generated in just 15 months
📈 Passenger demand fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels
🚆 The UK's first signals-free commuter railway, delivered on the Northern City Line
👩 A 49% increase in female apprentices and two dedicated Women in Leadership programmes
🤝 GTR's first three-year corporate partnership with Mind
🏆 Southern winning the 2021 operator of the year award

But beyond the numbers, what Angie has built here is a team and a culture that puts passengers, colleagues, and communities at the heart of everything. That legacy carries on.

We’re also pleased to announce that our Chief Operating Officer John Whitehurst will take on the role of interim Chief Executive Officer from 31 May. John brings deep operational experience and valuable continuity, having worked closely with Angie and the executive team for the past two years. With John stepping up, our focus stays exactly where it has always been, and that’s to deliver safe, reliable services every day, with customers, colleagues and communities at the heart of everything we do.

Angie, from everyone at Great Northern: thank you. Australia and New Zealand are lucky to have you.

You may not recognise Matthew Streeton's face. His voice, however, will be very familiar to many.

For commuters across London and the South East, Matthew's words of "see it, say it, sorted" and "please stand back behind the yellow line" can be heard echoing through busy station concourses daily.

His voice has been heard across Great Northern services since 2011.

Find out what Matt gets up to when he’s not behind the mic, hear his thoughts on the rise of the “trainfluencer,” and watch as we put his railway knowledge to the test!

The work continues towards our ‘go live’ of digital signalling between Welwyn and Hitchin on the East Coast Main Line later this year.

Last month we took another step forward when, for the first time, more than two trains ran using the European Train Control System (ETCS) at the same time on the East Coast Main Line. It also involved the first time a train had operated in one ETCS area and then another on its journey.

Check out the below video explaining how it happened 👇
