🙏Tommy & St. Anthony's Bread🍞

A touching story connected to the powerful intercession of St. Anthony.

Tommy was a little boy, just 20 months old, who lived with his parents near the Basilica of St. Anthony. One day, while his mother briefly left him playing in the kitchen, a tragic accident occurred. A large pot of boiling water was on the fire, and curious Tommy climbed onto a stool to look inside. Seeing his reflection in the water, he reached out to touch it and fell into the pot.

When his mother returned moments later, she was horrified to find Tommy submerged in the boiling water. She quickly pulled him out, but the child appeared lifeless. Her cries of grief brought neighbors rushing to the house, along with several friars from the Basilica.

In her desperation, Tommy's mother remembered the many miracles attributed to St. Anthony. With great faith, she prayed aloud, promising that if her son were restored to life, she would donate his weight in bread to the poor.

As she continued her heartfelt prayer, a miracle occurred. Tommy suddenly awoke as if from a deep sleep, alive and well.

Since then, the tradition of offering St. Anthony's Bread has become a beautiful expression of gratitude and charity, helping those in need while honoring the saint's compassionate intercession.

Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

As the incarnate Son of God, Jesus’ heart is aflame with love for each one of us. Before you were even born, Jesus loved you. Even when you were lost in sin, he loved you enough to die for you. And even today, he wants you to “know and to believe” in your heart as well as in your head this unquenchable, unending love (1 John 4:16).

We can deepen our knowledge and belief in God’s love as we spend time with Jesus in our own “prayerful dialogue,” as we come “heart to heart” with him in prayer. We can speak to him of our joys and burdens, our dreams and desires. We can express our love for him and our gratitude for all he has done for us. Then we can listen for his word to us, a word that will reassure us that he holds us, now and always, in the depths of his own Sacred Heart.

To honor this great feast, try to set aside some time to speak to the Lord heart to heart and come to know, ever more deeply, the love Jesus has for you!

“Jesus, help my heart to burn with love for you!”

Land of Milk and Honey

You are the salt of the earth. (Matthew 5:13)

Everybody’s looking for something. Some strive for wealth, others pursue power, and still others seek human affirmation. But none of these are truly satisfying. As Pope St. John Paul II told the pilgrims gathered for World Youth Day 2000, “It is Jesus in fact that you seek when you dream of happiness; he is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you.”

It’s important to remember that Jesus spoke these words not only to his apostles, but also to the crowd gathered around them. He spoke them to everyday men and women just like us. That means that we can all be “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). As we “lose” our lives and follow Jesus, we “find” a more lively, exciting, “flavorful” life growing within us. We become more generous with our time and resources. We are more merciful and kind to the people around us. And we demonstrate the peace of Christ, even in challenging circumstances. And that new life makes us more attractive to everyone else.

St. Thomas Aquinas wrote, “Grace does not destroy nature but perfects it” (Summa I.1.8). To be holy is not to deny our humanity. It is the way God made us to live. His sanctifying grace builds upon the nature and personality we already have, making it clearer, stronger, and more beautiful.

Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. (Matthew 5:8)

When Jesus talks about “the clean of heart” seeing God in today’s Gospel, he’s talking about the beatific vision, that glorious moment when the blessed everyone whose hearts have been purified—see God face-to-face (Matthew 5:8). What a contrast to our experience in this life! We all know what it’s like to have our vision of Jesus obscured by sin. It’s like wearing glasses that are smudged and filled with dust and dirt.

Here’s one small example of how this process of purification might play out in our lives. Let’s say you’ve been getting drawn into neighborhood gossip and have caught yourself saying unkind things about people behind their backs. You’ve brought the sin to Confession. The next week, you overhear two neighbors talking about the person down the street. They’re criticizing her for not weeding her garden.

This time, instead of getting sucked into saying something negative, you find a way to steer the conversation to a different topic. Maybe you even make a positive comment about the neighbor with the weedy garden. That’s God at work! And because you cooperated with him, your vision of him became just a little clearer and your heart just a little more like his.

So keep cleaning your spiritual glasses and asking yourself, “Where will I see God today?”

Land of Milk and Honey

The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. (John 6:51)

Today we celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ. We stand in awe that Jesus makes himself truly and entirely present in the Eucharist. We marvel at the glorious mystery that the Divine Son of God not only became a man and offered himself on the cross but that he also comes to us, Body and Blood, soul and divinity, so that we can receive him.

Two thousand years later, we encounter this same Jesus at every Eucharist. What a glorious gift! He offered his Body and Blood on the cross to save us, and now he gives us that same Body and Blood on the altar.

At Mass today, as the priest lifts up the Host, fix your eyes and heart on Jesus. As you pray, “Lord, I am not worthy,” trust in the mercy of your crucified Savior. As you come forward to receive Jesus, proclaim your faith in his true, Real Presence in what was once only bread and wine. And as you kneel in grateful prayer, praise and thank him for giving his life to you and offering himself for the whole world.

Saint Anthony's Miracles. Eurilia Comes Back to Life

One day in Padua, a young girl named Eurilia accompanied her mother on a visit to an elderly woman. While her mother was inside, Eurilia stayed outside gathering sticks and twigs for the fire.

When the visit ended, her mother stepped outside and was horrified to find her daughter floating lifeless in a muddy pond. Eurilia had apparently slipped into the water and drowned.

Heartbroken, the mother pulled her daughter's body from the pond and laid her on the road. A crowd soon gathered. Seeing that the child was cold and rigid, one of the onlookers sadly declared that she was dead.

In her anguish, the mother turned to heaven and cried out:

"Oh please, St. Anthony, give me back my daughter."

Moments after this simple but heartfelt prayer, something extraordinary happened. Those gathered watched in amazement as Eurilia's lips began to move. She started coughing up the water she had swallowed, warmth returned to her body, and before long she was alive again.

Through the powerful intercession of St. Anthony and the mercy of Christ, the little girl was restored to life, bringing overwhelming joy to her mother and all who witnessed the miracle.

St. Anthony of Padua, pray for us.

. . in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 4:1)

In the opening of today’s first reading, Paul issues a solemn charge to Timothy as he writes, “in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 4:1). He is letting Timothy know that this exhortation to proclaim the word and to be persistent “whether it is convenient or inconvenient” is serious (4:2)!

You, too, are in the presence of God when you proclaim Christ!
1. You are in the presence of God as you face various temptations at work, on campus, or with your family. The Lord is present with you, giving you discernment and strength to proclaim his word.
2. You are in the presence of God when you’re driving, as you choose what to listen to, what to think about, and how to handle disruptions on the road.
3. You are in the presence of God as you interact with people, both in person and online. You can use these moments to proclaim God’s word and point them to his goodness.

🐴✨ The Miracle of St. Anthony and the Mule
In the city of Toulouse, where many denied the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, St. Anthony boldly defended the Catholic faith through preaching and debate. Yet some remained unconvinced.

One skeptic challenged him: “If you can make my mule bow before what you call the Body of Christ, I will believe.”
The mule was deprived of food for three days. On the appointed day, a crowd gathered as fresh fodder was placed before the starving animal. St. Anthony emerged from Mass carrying the Blessed Sacrament and called out:
"Mule, come here and show reverence to your Creator!"

To the amazement of everyone present, the hungry mule ignored the food, walked toward St. Anthony, and knelt before the Blessed Sacrament in adoration.
Witnessing this miracle, the mule's owner and many others returned to the Church.
This extraordinary event reminds us that all creation recognizes its Creator. The Eucharist is not merely a symbol but the true Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ.

🙏 St. Anthony of Padua, defender of the Eucharist, pray for us.

Land of Milk and Honey

Be on your guard. (2 Peter 3:17)

Like sailors at sea, the Christians who received the message in today’s first reading were navigating stormy, uncertain waters. For some, their faith was being shaken because Christ had not yet returned in glory. Others were simply drifting away from the Lord, and still others were beginning to follow teachers who offered what seemed to be an easier path than that of Jesus and the apostles. So it’s not surprising that Peter would warn all of them, “Be on your guard not to be led into . . . error” (2 Peter 3:17).

First, “Be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace” (2 Peter 3:14). Sin, which blemishes our hearts, only serves to weaken us spiritually. The more we indulge in it, the more susceptible we become to the philosophies of the world. By holding fast to the call to holiness and by turning back to the Lord in repentance when we do fall, we build up our strength so we can weather the storms of life.

Second, Peter tells us, “Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). The Christian life isn’t only about avoiding sin. It’s also about deepening our relationship with Jesus so that we become more like him. It’s about spending time with him in prayer and immersing ourselves in his word so that he can continually shape our thoughts, our words, and our actions.

Finally, the call to discipleship is a call both to “wait” patiently for the Lord and to “hasten” his “day” by actively sharing the gospel, praying for the coming of the kingdom, and caring for the people he has placed in our lives (2 Peter 3:12). It’s a call to stand firm in faith no matter the storms that come to us.

Land of Milk and Honey

You have tasted that the Lord is good. (1 Peter 2:3)

Can you look back on a time when you first “tasted” the goodness of the Lord and decided to follow him more closely? What was your life like before then? How is it different now? Such a “before” and “after” contrast can reveal that goodness and help you grow in gratitude for God’s personal love for you and for the great mercy he has shown you.

You might also think about how different your life might have been if you had never discovered the goodness of God. You may have made very different decisions, perhaps ones that would have kept you separated from God and his body, the Church. Perhaps without the experience of being loved and forgiven by God, you might be mired in guilt or bound in bitterness. Or maybe you would have questioned the meaning and purpose of life and wondered whether there was any kind of life after death.
