Thank you to everyone who reached out after my video about Koken, the photography CMS I built a little over a decade ago and recently got back. It's been a lot of fun hearing from people who used Koken back in the day, and from those discovering it for the first time. Many of you have also shared ideas for where it could go next, which I really appreciate.

Since posting the video a few days ago, I've been thinking about why (after seven years) I never talked about Koken here on YouTube until now. Honestly, I think I was holding on to a lot of unresolved regret about how it ended, the users we let down, the evaporation of something we poured ourselves into, not to mention lingering questions about whether the right calls were made. I was proud of what we built, but subconsciously eager to move on and build a new future for myself. The fact that I no longer had a working version to demonstrate didn't help either, but I believe the real reason had more to do with me than anything else.

I published the video over Memorial Day weekend, so if you missed it, check it out below. If and when we have something more to share about Koken's future, I'll let you know.

Just wrapped a few days of shooting in White Sands National Park, New Mexico, one of my favorite and most frequented landscapes in the American West. This trip, I applied for (and was granted) a paid special use permit to shoot earlier and later than public park hours. This required rangers coming and letting me in and out of park’s locked front gate. Photographically? Very excited by what I see on my SD card, especially the sunrise images which normally are practically impossible to create. More soon :)

Time is constant presence in my landscape photography. Millions of years, shaping and molding the earth without human intervention or influence. This is especially true in the raw, primal, unforgiving deserts of the American west (which need to be protected and preserved). This video beautifully illustrates the long arc of time and how small our lives are in comparison. INCREDIBLE work.

I couldn't stomach paying $1000+ for a commercial, print viewing station, so I did a DIY thing using high CRI, D50 lights from Waveform Lighting, plus a camera rig from GlideGear and some gray photo backdrop paper. Overkill? Probably, but I very much wanted a proper space to view and evaluate prints, papers, and shoot photos and videos. I'll be using this in a video tomorrow about Canson's Arches fine art matte papers.

In case anyone’s wondering, Fujifilm repaired my damaged GFX 100S II. The total cost came to $1,393.49. 😭 They found a few additional issues beyond the broken LCD, which made the repair take longer and cost more than expected. I’m definitely going to look into gear insurance to avoid this kind of hit in the future.

Canon has (finally!) announced the Canon PRO-1100, an upgraded version of the nearly decade old PRO-1000 inkjet photo printer. I've had a number of people contact me since the PRO-300 was introduced (the printer I use) asking whether they should get the 300 or wait for an upgraded 1000, and...well, a new option is finally here.

Pre-order Canon PRO-1100

The PRO-300 is more or less a smaller, more affordable PRO-1000 utilizing the same inks. But the PRO-1100 will be different. It will introduce a new "LUCIA PRO II" 12 ink set that promises better archival quality, improved scratch resistance, and improved "blue dark" areas.

Worth noting, 11 of these 12 inks are newly developed and will be unique to the PRO-1100. The remaining "matte black" ink is the same matte black ink used in the PRO-300. So when Canon writes about "deeper blacks", that appears to be in reference to the older PRO-1000. The Canon PRO-300 has the same matte black ink, but the rest of the colors will be unique to the PRO-1100.

Overall, the PRO-1100 appears to be mostly an incremental upgrade for those who want larger prints than what the PRO-300 can produce, but newer hardware and components are obviously a plus.

Great new (and free!) Photoshop plugin from the developer of the excellent TK9 luminosity mask plugin that helps soft proof, resize, sharpen, and adjust Photoshop images for print. Landscape photographer Sean Bagshaw introduces it in this video, with a demonstration about halfway through.

🤯 WOW! Excited to share that all 150 copies of my new zine SOLD OUT in less than 48 hours. TBH, I was so anxious after launching it I turned notifications off and avoided email for many hours. Then this morning I checked, and BAM - all gone! Can't thank you enough for supporting my work and being part of this. You're the best. 😊

I am very much looking forward to getting my hands on the BENRO THETA, a self-leveling tripod (yes, you read that right) that was introduced through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign almost exactly a year ago. The product appeared to be more or less finished when announced, but if you've been following their crowdfunding campaign like I have, you know that THETA has gone through numerous changes and problematic quality control issues. Many backers are frustrated. From afar, it appears that Benro has really struggled to finish the product and bring it to market.

Benro claimed three weeks ago that the "first batch" of THETA tripods were now shipping, but I've yet to see one at my doorstep. Once I have one, I'll be publishing a first-hand review as quickly as possible, for like many of you I'm sure, I'm dying to know if the product actually works and provides a better user experience.

Speaking of tripods, yesterday I reviewed the new "Real Travel Tripod" from Freewell, a super compact, lightweight travel tripod. I tested the tripod for a week of video during a recent photography trip, and found that it had some notable pros and cons. Check out that review here: https://youtu.be/oy8GRnWyoMM
